Shiite Muslims across the world are observing Muharram, the first month of Islamic calendar, during which Shiites stage massive processions of mourning, the climax of which is Ashura Festival, to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who died in a battle near the Iraqi city of Karbala in the seventh century.
